When I was at the institute I came up with an idea based on my experience building and running websites. Seeing as how I'm an Internet fogey, and have lots of such experience, the idea was of course, brilliant.
I pondered to myself, "Self, you beautiful thang you, how does a once burgeoning site become defunct? Why is it that web masters lose interest, or sight of the original goal and let entire communities -- populations with history, and a future -- wither into oblivion?"
The answer is simple. They change -- their interests change, their priorities change. Their schedule changes.
So it's no wonder that a select few people in charge of a massive website will eventually falter, and with them will topple their website. But I have a solution.
What if it was everyone's website? What if "staff" and "viewer" were one and the same? That's how BlizzLink works: it's called Squad-based administration. What happens is that a demigod staff member (in this case either myself or my esteemed colleague Spider), will oversee certain predetermined sections and aspects of the site. The buck stops with us with these sections, and it's our responsibility to make sure our goals are met. The difference is that we don't actually have to do the work. We hire out. We have several people under us contributing to us freelance or on the basis of assignment, a little like a syndicated columnist.
We might have people looking for news to post, or people writing fan fiction, or articles, or creating art. We may have someone watching the forums. We may have someone watching you.
Whatever the job is, it gets done because of the sheer amount of people working on it. We'll occasionally post a "Wanted" ad for a specific article or position, but here's how most people will get jobs... get ready for it:
They do something and give it to us.
Holy fuckin' shit dude, it's brilliant. You see, you send us something and we approve it, we put it up, and you get immortalized on the Guilty Parties page. A person who regularly contributes will undoubtedly find themselves with more recognition, trust, perks, and responsibility (if you're into that kind of thing).
If you're interested, start your motor running, do something fantastic and wonderful, and send it in. Also, check the Wanted page for work we need done.
Thanks for your interest, and as always, rock on.
